Dong Quai

Angelica Sinensis

Angelica Sinensis (Dong Quai)Dong Quai is derived from the root of the angelica plant and is one of the most commonly used female tonic herbs in traditional Chinese medicine.

Dong Quai possess phyto-oestrogenic properties that is approximately 1/400 to that of human oestrogen. Phyto-oestrogens have been shown to help restore oestrogenic balance back to the system.

Phyto-oestrogens have been found to mimic the action of human oestrogen and are able to bind with oestrogen receptor site in the body. It is thought that its this ability that helps to restore balance. In the case of too much oestrogen the phyto-oestrogns are able to occupy receptor sites that would otherwise be occupied by the stronger hormone. If oestrogen activity is too low, phyto-oestrogens can exert a mild positive oestrogenic effect.

Combine Dong Quai’s effective pain relieving analgesic effects, and its smooth muscle relaxant properties ensure that Dong Quai remains the herb of choice for many PMT sufferers helping to ease menstrual cramps, headaches and sooth sore muscles.

Notes: Dong quai has been shown to dilate blood vessels, this property can increase blood flow to the uterus, which in some individuals can initially cause heavier periods.
