CAM Therapies for Headaches
Acupuncture is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that is gaining popularity in the Western medical community. Some patients are experiencing relief from their headaches through its use. Acupuncture is considered a safe treatment for headache.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a counselling technique effective in treating a variety of mood disorders, including anxiety and depression. It involves identifying negative thoughts and attitudes that may contribute to a headache, developing an action plan to deal with the headache and encouraging patients to come up with a long-term treatment solution. CBT has been used with other behavioural techniques, but is quite effective on its own.
Osteopathy has long been associated with the treatment of headaches. In the early 1900s, William Garner Sutherland introduced the concept of cranial osteopathy—the gentle manipulation of the bones of the skull. Sutherland demonstrated that the 22 bones in the head undergo small movements and that restriction of these movements can cause headaches. Today, cranial osteopathy is often referred to as cranial-sacral therapy. Although this therapy is often directed at restoring balance to the entire body, it is particularly relevant to the treatment of headaches.
